    Seen a lot of videos but nowhere have I seen the benefits of using the combination of a pilot hole/clearance hole for drilling and fastening wood. To fasten one wood member to another and guarantee maximum contact and strength, do the following: line up the two wood pieces and drill a small pilot hole through both pieces of wood. The drill a clearance hole through the wood you want to fasten to the other. Driopping the screw into the clearance hole and drive the screw into the pilot hole. If you are using glue, the resulting pressure will assure a great bond. Most screws hold best when the threads cut into the side of the hole. If you drive a screw directly into the wood, the wood fibers are crushed to make room for the screw and the result is less holding power. You only need to use this technique if you want or need the strongest bond possible. It is more time consuming than just driving the screw into both pieces, but not needed if the wood lays flat. Works great if you have 3 drills. One for the pilot drill, one for the clearance drill and one for the driver bit. Also prevents the wood splitting.

    Perhaps I could make more money if I had a different mindset. I am a home inspector and I view myself as the only person involved in the transaction who is on the customers side. I have spent my hole life at this point in construction so my biggest challenge is definitely highlighting the major issues in a clear way that also leaves my position legally ambiguous. From the inside I believe the industry needs to change such that knowledgeable inspectors can distinguish themselves without making themselves liable for Failled transactions, unnecessary consultation fees, ect.

    Health reasons- a key reason people don't enter many of the trades ie. tiling and glass installation and cutting. Silica dust from tiling, glass dust from cutting glass over time is strongly correlated with COPD development and other lung issues. I know someone who earns 10,000 plus monthly tiling but I can hear his breathing is slightly labored...he doesn't smoke and wears N95 mask. I like lots of variety and adore working and thought of tiling p/t time as it is very interesting work but I read several peer reviewed studies correlating COPD with various trades.

  • @ericadenison1019
    @ericadenison1019 18 годин тому

    People prioritize their physical health- ie. tiling is a very interesting job and pays relatively well but the silica dust from cutting tiles when breathed in over time causes COPD and other lung issues, same with Glass, just look at glass dust under a microscope after trimming/cutting glass they are tiny sharp pieces. People in Japan are readily in excellent health living over 100 plus, the same trend is occurring in other western countries. But if a person starts tiling even part time when they are 20 they can end up with lung issues by the time they are are thirty. There is evidence the particulate gets through N95 masks so not so sure about the masks being 100% perfectly good protection, they must be sealed perfectly as well around your nose/mouth. Cement also releases dangerous particulate....I am very social with a huge network of friends ect.. and several people I know have thought of construction but decided against due to the health concerns over time. I do know a gentleman who earns 10,000 a month plus with tiling but I can hear he has slightly labored breathing.....

    Worst result I saw personally was working at a truss plant. We had a large speedcut saw with a good sized turn table and cut depth over by one of the sawyer stations near the web saws. Dedicated area to cutting lengths off with a long table and all. Sometimes guys would get in a hurry, grab the board with their left hand to the left of the saw (safe) and make a cut. Instead of moving the board and holding it again on the left of the blade they'd leave their left hand in place and tug the board across trying to get 2 cuts before repositioning their support hand. Any time we saw that nonsense we'd warn them and reprimand them for having their non cutting arm across the front of the saw. One guy apparently didn't listen, did just that. The saw bound up and jerked, popped through the cut a lot faster and further than he planned on. Blade cut into the edge of his forearm and damn near lopped his arm off. Thankfully the hospital was close by, one guy tore his shirt off and tied a quick binding tourniquet. Threw him in a truck and rushed him to the e.r. where they were able to reattach his arm with minimal damage. Not only got tasked with cleaning the pieces of skin and meat off the backstop of the saw, was working in the maintenance dept where we had to try and fashion some sort of idiot proof guard for it. The factory guard mostly shielded the blade but enough room to get an arm under there. Ended up heating and bending some flat stock following both sides of the blade into long U shapes just high enough to clear 1.5" for 2x material and had it extending well in front of the blade bolted to the existing guard. And of course he was banned from using any of the saws again. Most accidents seem to happen when people become distracted or too focused on shortcuts, losing respect for the tools they're operating.

    This is probably your worst video - your technique is really poor! You should use a square blade and let it sink in at an angle. Because then a large part of your blade is already in the wood, and you will naturally get a straight line as you push further, same as with a circular saw. I get much straighter cuts than the ones you demo here.

    I definitely agree with you that a tankless should be sold for its convenience and endless hot water. Every time I hear someone trying to sell one of these to a home owner on the basis that they'll save a ton of money just makes me cringe. Most tank style hot water tanks also have a first hour rating since the tank is heating while it's in use. Mine for example is a 50 gallon power vent with an 80 gallon first hour rating, so even with 4 back to back showers in my house we have yet to run out of water with that unit.

Got a material handler (Gradall) because I was building houses alone. The biggest problem was the market would go from too much work to none. Learned to save as much as possible when it was busy. Now at 64, working for an Architect as a drafter. You have good videos.
